When we moved here late last summer, I constantly heard people talk about going to the "Appel Happel" for some apple picking. However, wether it was due to unpacking and decorating, or simply because we didn't make it a priority, we never went last year. So, when the first apple picking pictures appeared on my Facebook feed last week, I knew that we should finally venture out and see the orchards for ourselves.
And really, what a great way to spend family time. The rows of trees look beautiful & the apples taste great. We enjoyed the 40 minute drive and caught up on some stories, that we never got to talk about during the busy week. Once we arrived, we grabbed the oldest wheel barrel we could find (I have a thing for aesthetics - ha!) and started picking.
I let Smilla be wild and free and explore a little bit on her own. She crawled around squealing with joy and was busy for at least 20 minutes when I gave her a ripe apple to explore and gnaw on. That's what a happy childhood is all about, isn't it? Having the freedom to get dirty, play and explore, always knowing that the people you trust are just one step away. The simple pleasures.
I was squealing with joy, too, by the way. Every time my husband picked me up and lifted me up high into the air to grab the sweetest apples from the top. Who said, you can't have a romantic date & a family outing!
We rounded up the day around the bonfire, ate some of the season's first pumpkin soup and picked up some apple wine. Latter, really tasted pretty awful though. So stay away from that and maybe try the apple schnaps instead!
The best part about apple picking though is, that the fun has only just begun! So many possibilities ahead...apple muffins, apple crisp, apple sauce, apple jam, apple pie, apple butter....!
